Ocean's 8: The Coolest Lady Gang on Screen

Ocean's 8 is the kind of movie that will make you want to leave behind your law abiding existence and join a criminal ring. After I saw it I was tempted to try the slick department store heist that Sandra Bullock's Debbie Ocean pulls off at the beginning of the film. I did not, of course, but I wanted to. Ocean's 8 is an exciting, fast paced film that is the perfect summer movie to see with your best friends. It has fun plot twists, great humor, killer fashion (hello pant suits!), and celebrity cameos that will make you say, "How'd they get them in the movie?!".  For all of the hype around it being an all women cast, what is so great about it is that the plot does not focus solely on them all being women. They are just eight people who are really good at their jobs! Their girl power is inherent and not the sole focus, which makes it even more powerful. The strongest part of the movie is that each of the eight women is a force on her own. I didn't want it to end simply because I wanted to see what else these women could do. Anne Hathaway was above and beyond the breakout star of the film. Her character, actress Daphne Kruger, is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the stereotypical actress and Hathaway pulls it off with subtlety and humor. The plot is pretty standard for a heist movie and hits all of the familiar beats- the planning, the hit, the payout- but what really makes the film is the characters. I did find myself a bit anxious during the movie because I kept anticipating what was going to happen and assuming that a big twist was right around the corner. Despite that, I still really enjoyed it. I recommend seeing it in theaters- the quick cuts and dramatic pacing is meant to be viewed on the big screen. This movie is not going to be winning the Oscar for Best Picture but who cares? I  recommend making a night out of seeing it with your best gals!

FRANKLY: GO SEE IT Now! 3.5/5.
