Incredibles 2: Not Your Average Cartoon
In all my years of movie going, I never expected to be on the edge of my seat, and slightly scared, during an animated movie. Incredibles 2 changed that. There were parts of the film that had me actually stressed out about what was going to happen next. The stunning animated feature is rather mature for Disney, which was both surprising and refreshing. You won't have to sit through the sad beats, crisis of conscious or mourning of a lost love that normally come with a Disney movie. This is just old-fashioned good versus evil and it was all the better for it.
The plot revolves around Elastigirl being sent out into the world to change the public's negative perception of super heroes while Mr. Incredible is left at home with their kids. Obviously, things do not go according to plan and the heroes have to come together to save the day. While I appreciated the dad-stays-at-home-with-the-kids plot point, I wanted to see more of the family together. The kids, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack were the most entertaining and I wanted them to have even more screen time than they already did. I would have been okay with 20 minutes less of Elastigirl's heroics and more of Jack-Jack's developing powers. He was the best character and he doesn't even speak any real words.
I would recommend watching the original Incredibles film before seeing this movie. At least do a brief Wikipedia skim of the plot points. I did not and spent the first 20 minutes of the movie trying to remember what happened previously, which was a bit jarring as a viewer, especially since this film picks up exactly where the first one left off. I would also look up who voices all of the characters before because once I figured out what was going on I was then lost in trying to match each voice to the actor I thought it could be. I spent a good 15 minutes of the movie trying to figure out who voiced the character Evelyn Deavor. Even then, I thought it was Rashida Jones until IMDBing it after and finding out it was actually Catherine Keener.
Overall, I recommend seeing this movie. If you can't make it out to the theater in time, or don't want to sit in the front row since every screening seems to be almost sold out, definitely rent it when it's on demand. It's a great week-night movie!
